The key to having great health is eating a variety of foods. There are certainly countless types of foods out there. They are divided into food groups. The five basic food groups include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. The overview of the food groups are displayed on ChooseMyPlate.gov to, “Advance and promote dietary guidance for all Americans” (Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP), 1994). The foods incorporated into the MyPlate groups are considered healthy.
There are variety of fruits and vegetables that contribute to great health. The amount of fruit and vegetables recommended to eat, “depends on age, sex, and level of physical activity” (United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 2014). The daily recommended amount for everybody of all ages varies between one to two cups. Some examples of healthy fruits are apples, strawberries, cherries, grapes, oranges and pears, just to name a few. The daily amount of vegetables people should be getting varies from about one to three cups. There are countless types of vegetables, some of which include red peppers, carrots, spinach, broccoli, greens peas, and celery. Fruits and vegetables are vital to add to daily intake because they are some of the most nutrient-dense foods.
Dairy, grains, and protein foods also contribute to a great health. Dairy is great group of foods to have because, “People who consume dairy products have better intake of nutrients than people who do not consume dairy products” (The Dairy Council, 2014). Some simple dairy products include milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, and mozzarella cheese. People who eat grains should have about one and a half to four ounces a day. Some healthy grains are brown rice, popcorn, spaghetti, and corn flakes. Protein foods vary from meats to eggs to beans to nuts to seafood. Some examples are beef, ham, chicken, duck eggs, kidney beans, cashews, tuna, shrimp, and tofu. Incorporating any and all of these foods to your daily life will most certainly benefit you.
